Medical Services Overview

There are a variety of opportunities for a great lifestyle and rewarding career practicing as a doctor within the Greater Western Area Health Service. Greater Westen AHS has over 50 facilities from local community MPS clinics through to large Base Hospitals, with redevelopment work at Bathurst and Orange continuing over the next two years to create two state-of-the-art facilities; and with redevelopments at Dubbo, Parkes and Forbes planned for the near future.

Whether you’re just embarking upon a career in medicine, or have an established career in general or subspecialty practice, there are opportunities with Greater Western for you to make a difference in your professional life, and to make the most out of the time you spend outside work.

Junior Medical Officer training occurs at Bathurst, Broken Hill, Dubbo and Orange Base Hospitals, with the opportunity to do a full 2 year internship and residency in either Dubbo or Orange. This experience will give you a firm foundation of general medical and surgical terms, and subspecialty terms, from which to embark upon specialty training or move into training in General Practice with GPLogic, the region’s general practice training provider.

The Base hospitals also have accredited registrar training posts in all the major disciplines, and can provide advanced-skills posts for GP trainees in anaesthetics, emergency medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics, and psychiatry. Dubbo can also arrange con-joint appointments with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Career Medical Officers are an increasing part of our workforce, and have the opportunity to develop a practice arrangement that suits their lifestyle and professional interests in any one of the Base Hospitals, or the larger procedural facilities.

Specialty appointments can be arranged at the four Base Hospitals, with the opportunity to combine subspecialty interests with general medicine; or negotiate a networked subspecialty appointment. All specialists participate in the provision of outreach services to the surrounding communities.

General Practitioners interested in either procedural practice or non-procedural practice will find rewarding opportunities throughout our Area Health Service, with hospital practice, and the management of critically-unwell patients supported by a network of local specialists, the Patient-Flow Unit, the Critical Care Advisory Service, the Royal Flying Doctors Service in Dubbo, and the Orange-based State Retrieval Service helicopter.
